WHAT CAUSES OUR SKIN TO AGE?
First wrinkles tend to appear in areas where the skin naturally folds during facial expressions. They develop due to the skin becoming thinner and less elastic over time.1 Collagen is a protein present in our skin, giving it its elasticity and plumpness. Due to several factors such as pollution, stress, sun exposure, smoking, medications and genetic factors, the body's capacity to produce collagen starts to deplete at age 30. Its production starts to dwindle in the mid-to-late 20s and early 30s and we start losing 1% of our collagen per year after that. By 40, collagen drops dramatically, leading to signs of ageing such as wrinkles, skin sagging, and skin drying. There are many treatments available to help reduce fine lines on the skin but the best cure is prevention.2
FIRST SIGNS OF AGEING.3
Fine lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles are the most evident and often most concern-causing signs of ageing for men and women.
The glowing, dewy skin of youth slowly fades with age. The result is a dulled complexion due to the depleted moisture levels in the top layer of the skin, which naturally occurs with age.
Ageing causes the complexion to become uneven. This may be due to parts of the skin harbouring more melanin than others, or the function in the hormonal levels in females.
Young, healthy skin has a high moisture content, leading to a fresh, dewy and radiant appearance, Over the ageing process this depletes as the skin loses its ability to retain the moisture.
Pores become enlarged or more visible with age due to loss of skin elasticity and skin being drawn down by gravity.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
The sun plays a major role in the premature ageing of our skin. Lifestyle also influences the condition of our skin. Aesthetic specialists recommend adopting a healthy lifestyle (drinking less alcohol, exercising most days of the week...) and a skincare routine (cleanse your skin gently, apply a facial moisturizer every day, and protect your skin from the sun every day with a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF50.).4
